Shekeres and Djabarras are West African style percussion instruments which are indispensable to professional ensembles and drum circles alike. These beaded gourd rattles and shakers are sure to please the most demanding musician. Order your shekere or djabarra today by using the lists at the bottom of this page. Shekeres are made from medium sized bottle or birdhouse gourds (7 to 10 inches in diameter). Available with plastic or wooden beads. Hemp or nylon twine is available with plastic beads. Wooden beads have a softer, shimmering sound. The plastic beads produce a sharper, crisper sound. Colors for wooden beads are limited to those pictured above. Colors for plastic beads vary greatly and you may choose up to 3 different colors for your shekere. If you have a design pattern in mind for the bead work, please contact us to discuss a special order.
Djabarras are made from medium sized long neck gourds such as dipper gourds. The beaded net features a tassle at one end that is grasped with the hand and pulled up and down to make the sound. Djabarra gourd rattles offer a great deal of control which allows the percussionist to produce complex rhythm patterns. Djabarras are available with plastic beads on hemp nets only. You may choose up to 3 different colors of beads for your djabarra.

Bead colors available are: Blue, Transparent Blue, White, Yellow, Red, Transparent Red, Brown, Orange, Metallic Black, Black, Green, Transparent Green and GLOW IN THE DARK beads. We have other interesting colors available, so send us an email if you have questions about a particular color you would like to use.
