Dounouns (also known as dununs, djun djuns or dun duns) are an African style bass drum with two heads. They come in three sizes: the Kenkeni (small), Sangba (medium) and Doundoumba (large). Each drum produces a clear, resonant, deep bass tone. The three dounoun sizes can each be tuned to a different pitch and played together as an ensemble to create intricate bass patterns and melodies. We offer both stave construction dounouns (strips of wood precision-joined for superior strength) or hand carved dounouns. Available with cowskin heads.
Stave construction dounouns (on the left in photo above) are made from responsibly harvested hardwoods (maple, cherry, walnut), pine or poplar. Although we offer both stave construction and hand carved dounouns, there are a couple of advantages that stave construction drums have over hand carved instruments. First, the wood for stave construction has been kiln dried and is very stable and less prone to cracking due to moisture fluctuations. Second, stave construction uses less wood to begin with and creates less waste as the drum is created. The scraps left over from creating a large stave constructed drum can be used to create smaller drums. Stave construction dounouns are lighter in weight than most hand carved dounouns and we have carefully designed these drums to have an excellent tone and volume.

We make hand carved dounouns (on right in photo at top of page) are available from a variety of trees salvaged from construction sites where they would otherwise be wasted and burned. We also import a small number of African dounoun shells each year. Hand-carved drums are made to order on a commission basis.
