Originating in Nigeria, West Africa, the ashiko is a popular and versatile hand drum. With a goatskin head, the ashiko can have a crisp, sharp sound much like a djembe. With a deer or cow skin head it can have a warmer tone similar to a conga. All Wildwood ashikos have African style tuning system made with high strength, low stretch rope. These drums are hand crafted from responsibly harvested hardwoods (maple, cherry, walnut), poplar or pine. Our ashikos are created using stave construction, uniform pieces of wood precision joined together. This method of drum construction is a good alternative to hand carved drums in that stave construction uses less wood to begin with and creates less waste. The scraps left over from creating a large stave constructed drum can be used to create smaller drums. Our Ashikos also feature a ridge shaped into the drum shell to hold the bottom tension ring in place and keep it from sliding up the shell. This allows the ashiko to resonate more freely as a ring that keeps sliding up the drum shell will get tighter and tighter on the shell, choking off the drum's voice. Our ashikos have a wonderful deep bass, clear mid-tones and a crackling slap.
